Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could commit her time to writing, reading, theater and other interests. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is powerful in promoting social activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and showed her how to use the arts to find a way to express herself. Although DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family, she always spent summers living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was were later the inspiration to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of the juries. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism, and she decided to go into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right after college, as the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. From this position she started her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several lifestyle networks and promotions including The Urban Beauty Collective.
