Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The actress worked as a late night nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed in her day for the love of writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social conscience and advised DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her time in Selma would later inspire her to direct a movie on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received diplomas in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the responsibility of looking over the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one jurors. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, she determined to make a move as a publicist. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio after college. In this role, she launched her own firm of public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company also launched a variety of marketing and lifestyle websites, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
